What is your role in the Electric Rodeo Circus?
I'm the mad scientist! While you won't see me up on the stage, I'm part of a very unique crew of people that have poured blood, sweat and tears into helping our incredible cast realize their visions of what we hope will leave you amazed. My contribution to ERC is the design of the lighting and other technical aspects of the performance; not only in conjunction with our costumiers to trick out the clothes and props with LEDs, but also with our stage designer, to enable the set to carry you away to another realm, through use of well-hidden technology!
Which influences have inspired your work in the show?
Our team. It sounds like a cop-out answer, but they are my influence. This is such a unique project, and I am from such a technical background, that these wonderful people have served as my looking glass into this weird and wonderful world. I suppose on top of that, there's a touch of Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka, a maybe a hint of Tim Burton, though don't ask me to specify which bits!
What's been the biggest challenge for you so far in this project?
Where to begin. The actors aren't the only ones with a 4th wall to maintain. Everything I bring to the production has to be invisible, until it is time to shine. You aren't to know that I've had my way with the set, props or costumes until they burst into life with a flash of light. This means everything has to be hidden. The lights, the wires, the batteries, the control packs... this is not a small undertaking; we are packing a *punch*, and it has to be seamless with the presentation. This in itself is the biggest challenge. If you've ever seen burlesque costumes, you can appreciate that there... isn't a lot of room to play with!
What do you find most exciting about this show?
The (hopefully!) awestruck faces of our audience. It's been a wild ride getting to where we are now, and we still have a lot of work to go yet! But every time I think of opening night, and being able to see the switch flip on the machine, for the fresh faces of our expectant audience, I get shivers down my spine!

Who needs sleep?!
You can keep up to date with Tom's latest projects via his website at http://www.fleet-labs.com. He's also available to commission for projects (but his time is incredibly valuable!). Of course if you come to our show, you'll get to see what his wizadry can really do!
