What is your role in the Electric Rodeo Circus?
My role in Electric Rodeo Circus is in the costume department! Together with Izzie we will be designing creating all the beautiful costumes you will see in the production! I will be working closely with Tom (the LED KING!) to design and map out where the lighting will go in the costumes and headdresses. One of the projects I am most proud of is Lena Mae’s red corset!
Which influences have inspired your work in the show?
When getting inspiration for the costumes for the show, it was important to get the artists input, the directors input as well as Izzie and mines input to see what would actually work or what could work better. I love to draw inspiration from designers such as Edith Head, Alexander McQueen, Colleen Atwood and also various mixed textile artists.
I also like to draw inspiration from paintings and traditional forms of art. Sometimes, just looking up when walking down the street you may see something that inspires you and ignites a spark of creativity. Sometimes it may also be global event, or a conversation with a random stranger on holiday that will ignite that spark to design and create. For this particular show I was looking at the way lights work, sounds, projection art and also big name productions like Cirque Du Soleil.
What's been the biggest challenge for you so far in this project?
The biggest challenge for me so far in this project is getting all the artists in the same room to finalise designs and fitting for the costumes. Also, a struggle is the amount of brain power and creativity is involved when working with electrics AND burlesque.
It’s one thing to add electrics and LEDS to a standard costume, but when you are adding them to a burlesque costume that will be seductively taken off and then flung across a stage, there adds the extra addition of concealing wires, battery packs, and making them indestructible! It’s a lot of fun, though working out the never ending creative puzzles in costume design and construction is tiring.
What do you find most exciting about this show?
The thing that I find most exciting from a creative anfle in the show is working with the LED lighting. It completely transforms the performances and the stage and takes you into a different world. If you have never seen burlesque or cabaret before this is the PERFECT show for you. I guarantee you will be blown away.
Professionally though, the most exciting thing about the show is being able to work with so many talented people and have so many creatives from all walks of life brought together in one room - the residencies are just mind blowing and you can really feel the inspiration flying.
